Where a destination carries an "Official" tag, the link opens the immigration or visa authority of that country so you can confirm the current rule yourself; destinations without one have no recorded official link yet.

Source and method

Source: Passport Index mirror dataset (MIT, licence), dataset last updated 2026-02-17, retrieved 2026-10-18, page generated 2026-10-18. This is a third-party aggregation, not per-country official gazettes. We additionally record official visa portals for 27 countries (link reachability checked on 2026-10-18 — that only confirms the link opens, not the policy text). Region grouping comes from the UN M49 country codes, flags from flag-icons (MIT); both are presentation layers only and change no visa conclusion. It is a different source from the hand-verified mainland-China passport snapshot (2025-01-15) on our country pages; where they disagree we show both on the China page. Rules change often - always confirm with the destination's official immigration channel before travelling.

FAQ

How many countries can a Vanuatu passport enter visa-free?

Of the 199 destinations in the dataset, 76 are visa-free or visa on arrival (46 visa-free, 30 on arrival), plus 4 requiring only a travel authorisation. The denominator is the dataset's 199 countries and territories, not every dependency on earth - do not read this as a global passport ranking.

Where are the visa-free stay limits?

Each destination shows the stay length stated by the dataset. Where no length is given (for example EU freedom of movement) the entry reads visa-free without a day count. Limits are set by the destination and can vary by nationality, purpose and port of entry - the official channel decides.

Do travel authorisations and e-visas count as visa-free?

No. A travel authorisation is an online registration, usually approved in minutes, and is not a visa. An e-visa is an online application that must be approved - substantively a visa. We list them separately so "apply first" is not counted as "walk on".

Where are the official government visa pages?

Where we have recorded an official immigration or visa portal for a destination, it is marked "Official" next to that destination and opens the government page in a new tab. For destinations without one, search for the national immigration authority. We checked only that the link opens, not that its content matches the dataset - the official page decides.

What do the flags represent?

Flags are a visual index for destinations only, taken from the open-source flag-icons project (MIT). They do not express any position on the political status of any territory; names follow the dataset and ICU common names.
